THERON EUGENE DOLTON
Theron Eugene Dolton was born 7 December 1849 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. He was the son of Richmond Dolton (born 1815) and Priscilla Hahn. According to the 1860 US Federal Census; at age 11 he and his family were living in Washington Township, Dekalb County, Missouri. In 1874 he married Josephine Ellison. They had twelve children together; ten of whom survived to adulthood.
According to the 1880 US Federal Census Theron and his family were living in Liberty, Dickinson County, Kansas. In 1905, at age 55, according to the Kansas State Census, he was living in Lyon, Geary, Kansas. In 1920, at age 71, according to the 1920 US Federal Census, he was living in Mustang, Canadian County, Oklahoma. Theron died in Junction City, Kansas in September 1935 at the age of eighty-five.
Jan Chartier, a descendent of Theron and Josephine Dolton provided the following information. Jan listed twelve children as descended from Theron and Josephine. I added them to the three I already had. Three of them match up with what Douglas Whitlock shared with me. I wonder which of the twelve had the nickname Hollie that Douglas Whitlock referred to. Ms. Chartier wrote that Theron was born December 7, 1849. She said, "We know the family lived in Yukon, OK, just west of Oklahoma City and that Josephine Ellison Dolton died in Yukon on Sept 11, 1928. James Dolton lived and I believe died in Fletcher, OK, a little northwest of Lawton and Scott, lived in Lawton. There is a Dolton Family Funeral Home in Lawton and I believe Scott's family ran that.
There are two family stories about the different spelling of Dalton-Dolton. One is that the older brothers changed the spelling (to O) so as not to be associated with the Dalton Gang. The others in that family Bible (which hasn't been found) spelled it Dolton and the older sons kept that spelling and the younger members changed the spelling to A. Who knows? Charlie Dolton, the eldest son, lived in Enterprise, KS, and has descendants there. Harry and Carl were in Chapman, KS, Minnie and Jennie were here in Junction City.
I'm really intrigued with the Theron Dolton grave in the Mustang cemetery in Oklahoma. Theron Eugene died in Junction City, KS, and is buried in Rhinehart Cemetery south of Chapman, KS. The gravestone lists both Thereon and Josephine. Since Josephine died in Yukon, OK, I'm wondering if she may actually be buried there, and not here with Theron as the stone says. Theron came back to Kansas after her death. Could it be that they had a stone erected with Theron planning to be buried there also?" [Jan Chartier, 643 Crestview, Junction City, KS, 66441]
